Estate planning isn’t just for the wealthy: four documents everyone needs
A will is only the start. These four documents protect your family if something happens to you, at any age and any net worth.

Estate planning sounds like something for people with yachts. In reality it’s about making sure the people you love aren’t left guessing.
1. A will
It names who inherits your assets and, crucially for parents, who would raise your children.
2. Financial power of attorney
It lets someone you trust pay bills and manage accounts if you can’t.
3. Healthcare proxy and living will
They name who makes medical decisions for you and record your wishes, sparing your family painful guesswork.
4. Up-to-date beneficiary designations
Retirement accounts and life insurance pass by beneficiary form, not by your will. An old form can send money to an ex-spouse.
